Top Crib Safety Tips

step by step guide on setting up a safe crib for your baby

alma mini crib grey with newborn

In honor of Baby Safety Month, we are breaking down top safety tips for something we feel very passionately about: cribs. From crib placement to mattress fit, here is what you need to know when setting up a safe crib for your baby.

1. choose the right safe crib

Safety should be a top concern when selecting a crib. Make sure that the crib passes the CPSC & ATSM safety standards. The American Academy of Pedatrics (AAP) also recommends that crib slats are not wider than 2 ⅜ inches apart with no large cutouts in the headboard or foot board. Albloom cribs meet and exceed CPSC, ATSM, and international safety standards with regulated slat openings.

 2. pick the right firm crib mattress

AAP’s top safe sleep recommendation is to sleep on a firm flat sleep surface. Why having your baby always sleep in a crib and not a lounger, couch or your bed is so important.

Our bloom breathe mattress offers the best of both safe sleep and comfortability with dual-sided firmness. An extra firm surface for those critical 0-6 months and regular firm support for 6+ month use.

In addition to firmness, mattress fit inside the crib is also important. There should be a gap no bigger than 2 fingers between the mattress and the crib frame. We make 4 custom mattress sizes to ensure the right fit.

3. keep the crib bare with the right fitted sheet

The crib should be kept completely bare with a taunt, breathable fitted sheet. no pillows, blankets or toys should be in the crib. Make sure the fitted sheet is the right size for your crib, we make 4 custom fitted sheet sizes in 100% organic, breathable materials.

4. choose a safe spot for the crib

The best spot for your crib is the safest one. Make sure to place your crib away from all windows, radiators and heat sources. Regulating baby's temperature is also important so avoid direct sunlight as well. Ensure curtains, wall hangings and any strings from blinds are far away from your baby’s reach. If you choose to hang a mobile over head, make sure its securely fastened and has no risk of falling into the crib.

5. keep the crib in your room for baby's first months

According to the AAP, babies should sleep in the same room as their parents for at least the first six months. Placing your baby’s crib in your bedroom and close to (but NOT in) your bed can decrease the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) by as much as 50%. We understand that space can be tight and designed 3 custom smaller mobile crib sizes to easily fit in your bedroom.

7. back is best

Always place baby on their back in their crib not their side or tummy whether its for a short nap or overnight sleep. Babies who sleep on their backs are much less likely to die suddenly and unexpectedly than babies who sleep on their stomachs or sides.
